About this song
This song is a love story, dedicated to two of my friends. They have been married for a long time, and right after retirement, one of them developed early onset dementia and experienced a rapid decline in health. Instead of travelling and enjoying retirement together, one became a caregiver for the other. This song is dedicated to them, and to every caregiver of an individual living with dementia.
The life of a caregiver of someone with dementia is so challenging, and often they have very few supports, and they feel invisible and cut off from the outside world because of their caregiving responsibilities. I see you. This song is for you too.
Lyrics
The day you first forgot the name, of our only son
He was upset and I felt like, life had come undone
Now we’re finally retired with time to be, what we want to be
But instead your face you try to remember will forever haunt me
At first I was angry ‘cause how could life, be so bloody unfair
You used to be full of light and joy, now you’re barely there
But I realized while you’re right here, actually you’re not
You’re happy in the past with all your mem’ries, and the things you haven’t forgot
CHORUS
I’ll be with you whenever you are even if it’s in the past
A love like ours will never end, even when mem’ry won’t last
When I said forever and for better or worse, that is what I meant
I’ll love you whenever you are, now and back then
If home is the only place you can be, ‘cause the world makes you scared
Then I’ll stay home with you my dear and we’ll live our lives there
We’ll walk in the gardens of our distant past, over and over and over again
I’ll cook for you and tuck you in and no one will hear me complain
CHORUS
TAG LINE AFTER LAST CHORUS
And…..I miss who you were
