About This Song
This song is for two of the most important women in my life. My sister Margaret has been my singing partner since she was old enough to sing, and has been my most solid supporter in this musical adventure I am exploring. Her support and mentorship has been endless, and I would never have recorded a single song without her support. This song celebrates our life in music together.
This song is also for my sister by choice, Terra, who has been an amazing mentor and dear friend, and helped me learn how to share the stories I had to tell through my music. Margaret and Terra are the finest example of women supporting women to be their best selves. Both of them are amazing singers and everyone needs to list to their music as well as mine.
Lyrics
The day you were born, I was still young
Our musical journey had just begun
As kids we sang country, the classics you know
Lots of John Denver a little Hank Snow
We sang with dad in three part harmony
With me by his side and you on his knee
Music was the centre of our family life
We sang songs we loved every night
Ukuleles, guitars and voice lessons too
The start of a lifetime singing with you
Happiness flows as we sing every note
We’ve many more in us I don’t doubt-
CHORUS
Open our mouth and make a joyful noise
With my sister by blood and my sister by choice
There’s no other place that I’d rather be
Than standing next to you and singing in sweet harmony
Barbershop, musicals, jazz and pop
Opera and bluegrass – we never stop
Duets at weddings and funerals too
I only got through them because of you
Parties, concerts and events to raise funds
Laughed through many and cried through some
We’ve done solos, but we never forget
The best of all is singing duets
Then one day we heard a sweet tune
By a Summerville gal and wow could she croon
She understands the musical mystery
Now we have a harmony of three
Chorus
Sometimes we get it oh so right
Sometimes we get it wrong (oops!)
It doesn’t really matter to us
Cause we’re sisters in song
