About this Song
There is a special bond between equestrians and their horses that is difficult to describe. It is a partnership with a deep bond of mutual trust, love and care. And when an equestrian loses their partner, the grief is as profound as losing a close family member, yet often those who have not experienced this bond and its loss dismiss the significance by saying things like “it’s only an animal” or “it’s not like they lost a family member.” Actually, that person DID lose a very close family member and their grief is real and overwhelming. In a span of six months I lost two horses who meant very much to me. They taught me so much, and losing them both rocked my world. This song was written in memory of them.
Riding is a lot like dancing. And one of the first people who taught me to dance when I was very little, was my Uncle Carl, who taught me to round waltz while I stood on his feet. And so the style of this song is the round waltz in honour of him.
Lyrics
The day you came into my life
You wrapped your soul around my heart
You changed me in ways I did not expect
Challenging partnership right from the start
I thought I would lead our dance
But your ideas were different than mine
Sometimes I said left and you went right
But when we connected it was so sublime
Oh when we danced, two became one
Together we moved free and proud
When we danced it was just us in perfect harmony
And we knew what it meant to ride clouds
There were times that I gave up on you
But you, you never gave up on me
When I asked forgiveness for my mistakes
You always gave it willingly
Oh when we danced, two became one
Together we moved free and proud
When we danced it was just us in perfect harmony
And we knew what it meant to ride clouds
And now though our dance has ended
And I walk on our dance floor alone
I just look at the clouds to remember
The greatest dance partners I’ve known
Oh when we danced, two became one
Together we moved free and proud
When we danced it was just us in perfect harmony
And we knew what it meant
You taught me what it meant
Together we knew how to ride . . . to ride clouds
